The expectant mother throughout the entire period of gestation should be sensitive to her body in order to notice any violations in time. In this case, you need to pay attention not only to subjective sensations (good or bad health), but also to check the condition of the body using various examinations. Most of them are carried out in medical institutions, and at home it is enough to regularly measure body temperature, because its change can indicate various deviations in human health.
Women who use the physiological method of contraception (calendar) or, conversely, plan a pregnancy, are well aware that basal temperature changes at different periods of the menstrual cycle.
During ovulation, when the body prepares to fertilize the egg and become pregnant, it rises. This occurs, first of all, due to the action of female sex hormones, the level of which varies significantly.
The same picture is observed if conception has occurred. But in this case, not only the basal temperature, which is measured in the anus, but the temperature of the body as a whole can rise. That is why many pregnant women in the early stages face a slight increase in body temperature (usually up to 37.4 degrees).
Lowering the thermometer (below 36.4 degrees) may even indicate violations during pregnancy, up to the risk of miscarriage.
If an increase in temperature is accompanied by other symptoms (dizziness, body aches, sore throat, joints or other organs, runny nose, etc.), its causes need to be sought not in a change in the hormonal background, but in some other disorders in the body.
Causes of fever during pregnancy
In addition to changes in hormonal balance, an increase in body temperature (hyperthermia) in expectant mothers can provoke such factors:
- Infectious diseases: ARVI, influenza, pneumonia, intestinal infections, etc. They are accompanied by appropriate symptoms and require immediate treatment to avoid serious consequences for the fetus.
- Various systemic, autoimmune diseases (polyarthritis, rheumatism, systemic lupus erythematosus).
- Heatstroke. It can occur if the pregnant woman has been in the sun for a long time or in a poorly ventilated room at high air temperature, and is often accompanied by loss of consciousness.
- A very dangerous phenomenon is a frozen fruit. If the baby dies, but the miscarriage does not occur, his body begins to decompose in the womb, and an infection can penetrate into the tissues of the female genital organs.
Determining the cause of the fever is not only beyond the power of a woman, but also experienced doctors. Finding the source of this symptom is necessary for the successful treatment and prevention of various complications.
The effect of heat on the fetus
Any pathological changes in the mother’s body almost always affect the condition of the child in her womb. An increase in the body temperature of a woman will be the more dangerous for the baby, the higher the thermometer reaches the mark and the shorter the gestation period. In the very early stages of pregnancy, maternal hyperthermia can cause congenital abnormalities of the organs of the body, which are still being formed at this time. There may even be anomalies in the development of parts of the body, for example, the front of the skull or fingers and toes. High fever and the diseases with which it is associated can cause a miscarriage in the first months of pregnancy or an indication for a medical abortion if the doctor identifies serious abnormalities of the fetus.
At later dates, an increase in temperature does not in itself cause such serious violations in the baby, although the diseases that caused hyperthermia can greatly affect his condition.
If the thermometer reads close to 40 degrees, there is a real threat to the life of not only the child, but also his mother.
In this case, the likelihood of detachment of the placenta, which can entail premature birth.
How to deal with high fever during pregnancy
In the case when the heat stroke became the cause of hyperthermia, the pregnant woman needs to be given first aid – remove to fresh air, give water to drink, apply a wet handkerchief to her forehead.
It is better to call a doctor so that he assesses the condition of the woman and provides more qualified assistance if necessary. The doctor can determine if the heat stroke was the cause of the fever, or the pregnant woman has other health problems.
If the temperature has not risen above 37.5 degrees, it does not need to be knocked down, because this is a protective reaction of the body that can help it cope with pathogenic microorganisms in case of an infectious disease.
But higher indicators indicate that the body’s reaction is developing too rapidly, and then hyperthermia itself can become a source of danger to human health and life. During the bearing of a child, the problem of fever should be treated with increased attention. The attending physician should know about this symptom, you need to contact him immediately. Some women begin to bring down the temperature on their own, but such a decision can be reasonable only if it is not possible to contact your doctor or even call an ambulance.
Many antipyretic drugs, such as aspirin, are not suitable for pregnant women. Paracetamol-based drugs are allowed for use during pregnancy.
A future mother should always remember that temperature is only a signal that can indicate some kind of deviation in her state of health. Therefore, even a short increase in it will be an occasion for additional examination and increased control over the condition of the fetus. To reduce the risk of a symptom such as fever, a pregnant woman must take care of her health and strengthen it. It is better to start prevention even before conception, when a woman has more opportunities for hardening and playing sports. Both before and after pregnancy, you need to eat right, and you should also give up bad habits that significantly reduce immunity. During epidemics, the expectant mother should isolate herself from the sick and generally try to stay less in crowded places so as not to get an infection. Such measures may be additional troubles for the pregnant woman, but they can save the life and health of her baby.
